CBT Skills Groups for Adults/Teens
Who Groups Are For: The adult/teen social anxiety & avoidant personality CBT skills group is for adults/teens who can relate to the symptoms of social anxiety or avoidant personality or those who have been diagnosed with either condition. No formal diagnosis or referral is needed to join.
Adults, If you have a formal diagnosis or simply feel that you can relate to social anxiety or avoidant personality, we encourage you to join.
Parents of teens, we encourage you to sign your teen up if they have a formal diagnosis of social anxiety disorder or you have observed that your teen frequently struggles in social settings.
How Groups Work: Groups are broken up into grade levels for teens and ages for younger and older adults. Our evidence-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy skills groups teach advanced cognitive restructuring techniques and behavioral modification skills to help clients confidently and skillfully manage social interactions.
Group Therapist: Group members work closely with West Michigan anxiety specialist Dr. Shawn Nabors Ph.D. in our open CBT skills groups. Dr. Nabors is a leading anxiety specialist in West Michigan who delivers advanced CBT anxiety treatment programs.
Cost of Group Therapy: Dr. Shawn Nabors is an out-of-network provider. Group members meet bi-weekly (every other week) with Dr. Shawn Nabors at $65 per session. Clients may have the option to be reimbursed for services depending on their out-of-network coverage.

What Is Social Anxiety & Avoidant Personality?

Social Anxiety (SAD): The fear of appearing or looking unfavorable/foolish in social/interpersonal situations. Fear and anxiety of being negatively judged and evaluated by other people. The Fear of looking foolish or embarrassing one's self in public. Individuals fear acting in a way that may show anxiety symptoms that will be negatively judged.
SAD fear stems from a type of social performance anxiety that is overly concerned with embarrassment and damage to one's image or reputation. As a result, social situations are sometimes avoided or endured with mild to intense anxiety.
Avoidant Personality (AvPD): Consistent feelings of inadequacy/feeling inferior to others. Hypersensitive to judgment and criticism. Avoidance or reluctance of getting involved with people or making friends due to fears of being rejected, criticized, or judged. Individuals usually view themselves as unappealing, weird, or inferior to others and typically have low-self esteem.
AvPD fear stems from a debilitating sense of inferiority, it is overly concerned with being exposed as being unappealing as a person and being rejected. As a result, select interpersonal situations and most social situations are avoided or endured with moderate to intense anxiety.

Young Adolescence Group
Grades: 8,9,10
Group Description: The young adolescent anxiety skills group is for teens in grades 8,9, & 10. This group is a safe space designed to help teens who struggle with social anxiety and teens with developing symptoms of avoidant personality.

Older Adolescence Group
Grades: 11,12
Group Description: The Older adolescent anxiety skills group is for teens in grades 11,12. This group is a safe space designed to help teens who struggle with social anxiety and teens with developing symptoms of avoidant personality. This group helps older teens begin the process of transitioning into a post-high school social life.

Young Adult Group
Ages: 19-23
Group Description: The young adult anxiety skills group is for adults in ages 19-23. This group is a safe space designed to help adults who struggle with social anxiety and adults with developing symptoms of avoidant personality. This group helps young adults skillfully manage the social requirements of life as they build foundations for their future.

Older Adult Group
Ages: 24+
Group Description: The older adult skills group is for adults in ages 24+. This group is a safe space designed to help adults who struggle with social anxiety and adults with symptoms of avoidant personality. This group helps older adults address chronic social anxiety issues that have not improved with time.
