Behavioral Exposure Hierarchy
-
Background: A maladaptive behavior exposure hierarchy is a step-by-step plan to help someone gradually stop doing the behaviors they use to feel less anxious, like avoiding things or seeking reassurance. Instead of trying to change everything at once, we start with small, easy steps and work our way up to bigger challenges. This helps the person learn that they can handle situations without relying on these unhealthy behaviors, and over time, their anxiety and reliance on these behaviors decrease. It’s like climbing a ladder, one step at a time, until they feel more in control.
