Key Therapy Concepts
Scary Assumptions
-
Background: A form of automatic thoughts when anxious. Scary assumptions are catastrophic by nature and assume that, because anxiety is present, something bad will happen.
Absolute Core Beliefs
-
Background: Absolute and concise beliefs about everything we have encountered in our lives.
-
Nature of thought: Core beliefs are typically subconscious and can be identified by tracking our automatic thoughts.
-
Example of thought: Feeling anxious is bad.
Module 3: Key Module Concepts
Creating Core Beliefs
-
Background: Turning scary assumptions into core beliefs involves the process of using themes to better understand how your scary assumptions might sound as core beliefs. Themes often involve a deeper message that is found within the assumption. During this session, you and Dr. Nabors will be looking to the themes and deeper messages within your top scary assumptions so that they can be turned into core beliefs
-
How this helps with treatment: Understanding anxious core beliefs helps a person see why they act in certain anxious or unhelpful ways. It shows how their deepest thoughts influence their behaviors, making it easier to find better ways to cope
